All You Need is Love

4-12-14

The last few days have been a whirlwind of emotions. As I lay here on the deck of our beautiful beach casita, reflecting on my short time in Nicaragua, I am so grateful. I met the most beautiful, brilliant, special children. The kids in the school seemed happy while they were there, as most of their home lives are not the greatest. Escuela Especial is the brightest part of their day. Fellow students and teachers make up a loving family. They are safe, they are acknowledged, they are fed. Smiles and laughter fill the air, books are read, the promise of growth and opportunity lingers around every corner. The home visits were hard, the kids do not attend school. Some parents love their children and do what they can to help them. Some are less fortunate. In a home where putting food on the table is a struggle, the children with disabilities are usually last on the list. We saw a handful of abused, neglected children, who, although their bodies may not function properly, had sharp minds and open hearts. It was a struggle to witness firsthand. Communication with the children was difficult, but after a few days, I realized all that was needed was a hug, a kiss, or a hand held. The Beatles had it right... Love is all you need.
